Hampton front court surge too much for Bison as Lady Pirates ring in the new year with a victory

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Led by sophomore forward Ashlee Finley (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) , the Hampton University Lady Pirate front court combined for 40 points to lead the blue and white past Howard 78-66 inside Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.
The game was decided in the second half, as the game was locked at 37 all heading into halftime. Howard (0-12 overall, 0-2 in the MEAC) opened the second half with a 6-2 run that gave Howard a 43-39 lead at the 18:42 mark. However a lay-up by Finley started a 15-0 run by the Lady Pirates (5-6 overall, 1-1 in the MEAC) outscoring the Lady Bison, during a five-minute stretch that decided the game.
Hampton produced its best shooting half of the season as they connected half of their shots (14-28) during the second half of play.
The Lady Pirate bench was also dominate as the Hampton reserves outscored the Bison bench 35-11. But HU shot poorly from the charity stripe shooting 52 percent (22-42) for the game.
The Pirates were paced by Finley’s double-double performance of 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Junior guard Artavia Burns (Dallas, Texas, Lincoln HS) chipped in with 13 points, while sophomore forward Chinyere Ukoh (Woodbridge, Va./ Woodbridge HS) added 13 points and seven boards.
Melloni Benson led three Lady Bison in double figures with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Hampton will return to action on Saturday, January 6 when they head to Daytona Beach, Fla. to take on Bethune-Cookman at 2 p.m.
